The last couple of weeks have been crazy with the onset of Termite Swarms, and the invasion of the normal spring time pest like wasp, and Box Elder Bugs. The Rodent infestations I have come across have been extraordinary, especially for the spring season.
Bringing with them food and nesting material preparing for what is the most productive time of year for breeding and spreading their range.
Here are some important facts about Mice and Rats that everyone should know.
Rodents are the vector for many diseases and allergens. The Rat was responsible for the start of the plague of 1665 that killed thousands of Londoners. Rodents also carry fleas and maybe the cause of that mysterious flea problem you have even though you do not have any pets. The link below is to the CDC (Centers for Disease control and Prevention) you will find some great information on what diseases that Mice and Rats carry.

Well it looks like that time is upon us again, though starting a bit early. Termites are starting their annual swarming period, if you live in New Haven, Mason, or Point Pleasant West Virginia. Keep your eyes open for swarming Termites. Since the time has come, I have decided to take the time to educate you a bit and tell you what to look for if you think you have had a termite swarm.
Signs of a Termite Swarm:
If you have a swarm there are many ways you can tell if they are indeed Termites, or if they are another pest type. Here are some things that you will notice if you have a termite swarm. Though you may not notice all of these signs. One sign is if there is Mud shelter tubes appearing through your wall, baseboards, ceiling, window seals. These are also known as a Swarm Castle, this architecture marvel is constructed out of dirt, and feces. Shed wings laying around the home. When Termites swarm once they land their wings fall off, so you may notice many tiny clear wings that from a distance appear white. Large numbers of actual flying termites, these are the swarmers. Termites generally swarm around mid-day and you may notice Termite swarmers in window seals, or around large glass doors on the sunny side of the home. This does not mean that is where the Termites Swarmed. Termites when they swarm will head in the direction of natural light, and even lamps or over head lighting.
Termites damage more homes in the US than Fires, Tornados, Floods, Hurricanes and other natural disasters. If you notice any of the issues I have listed above it is very important that you have your home inspected by a professional, who will help you make the right decision in protecting your home from the damage that Termites can do.

How can I tell if I have termites in my home?
Signs of subterranean termites —
- Flying winged termites are often visible in your home when they swarm, or you may find wings they have shed.
- Damaged wood has the remains of mud tubes attached to wood tunnels in irregular patterns. White termites are also often found in the infested wood.
- Mud tubes extending from the ground to the woodwork or foundation walls are also a sign of termites. Each tube is about the diameter of a lead pencil.
Here is an example of Termite damage. You can see varying degrees of damage. If you suspect that you have Termites feel free to contact me for a free home inspection, and consultation.

Subterranean Termites are insects that live in the ground, in colonies or nests and are found throughout the United States. These termites swarm or fly in groups in spring and fall, especially after a rain and usually sunny. Termites look very similar to flying ants when they swarm. Both have two sets of wings; in termites all four wings are about the same size, while ants have a set of large wings and a set of smaller wings.
Here is a diagram of a Swarmer Termite, and a Winged Ant.
